Dutchboy's Patches is our happy-go-lucky Drent male. A son from our Bowi and Clio, he's a very enthusiastic hunter, a very happy farm dog, and best of all, he loves people. He stands 23 inches at the withers, 23-25 inches being the FCI and AKC breed standard. He's a leanly muscled dog, with rather heavy bone and weighs in around 65 lbs. He's very athletic, loves to swim — he's retrieved ducks for me at -16 F. He was always fantastic around his younger brothers and sisters, but this last litter he delegated the job of babysitter to his younger sister and kept the pups more at a distance.
His personality is fundamentally a happy, enthusiastic and energetic dog, and he is absolutely great around kids. We have customers at the farm that bring their kids just to see Patches! For many of those young kids, Patches was the first "big" dog they ever felt comfortable petting! He's a little reserved around other dogs, the result of a St. Bernard without a sense of humor. Musk rats, squirrels, mice and voles are on their own for their safety…
As a hunter, he's has a good point, backs his mother well, and has what I would call a "medium" nose. Not quite as long as his sire, but longer than his mother. He seems to prefer pheasants to sharptails, and hasn't quite seen enough Hungarian Partridge to have made up his mind……
Bayberry Kennel Puppies Make News
Jim Johnstone & Heather Chapman also breed Drents at their Bayberry Kennel in Nova Scotia. Their Sofie x Skylor litter made the news this year. Sofie is a full sister to our Patches. View the CTV News Atlantic's Rare Dutch Doggies video to see his sister's puppies!
